Skaill Cottage has been welcoming visitors to Westray since 1991.

Skaill Cottage exterior viewIt is very popular with families because of the space available, both inside and out, and the proximity to a lovely, sandy, south facing beach.  However, couples also find the Cottage suitable and can be accommodated on the ground floor only, if they wish, for a reduced rate.  The open fire in the lounge is a well-liked feature but central heating means the Cottage is comfortable summer or winter.

Skaill has been in the family for 3 generations and Skaill Cottage was initially built as a farmworkers cottage in 1966.  It has undergone extensive renovations in recent years and is now comfortable and functional.

Summer in Skaill Cottage

There are plenty of beaches, coastline and cliffs to visit within a short distance.  The summer flowers and seabirds are also an attraction but the seals and elusive otter are top of the checklist for many guests.  Seals regularly accompany walkers along the sandy beach and love to be sung to.  With the sun rising and setting so far north during our summer many fine sights of the sun setting over the sea can be seen from the cottage.

Winter in Skaill Cottage

This is an ideal place from which to view dramatic weather and the quality of the winter light changes the scenery completely.  If the night skies are clear there’s every chance to catch the Northern Lights or Merry Dancers.  Social activity in Westray doesn’t stop with the dark nights – it notches up a gear.  Dances, sales, coffee afternoons and Church activities keep the community busy and visitors are welcomed to all of these.  Or, if you prefer to stay indoors, there is a selection of Orkney books to browse through by the open fire.  Peace and quiet are included at no extra charge.
